Redemption

Forgiveness & Grace

The Bible, particularly in the New International Version (NIV), has many powerful verses on the theme of redemption—the act of being bought back or set free from sin and its consequences.

Here are some key NIV Bible verses about Redemption:

🕊️ Redemption Through Christ Jesus

  • Ephesians 1:7:  "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace."

  • Romans 3:23-24:  "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus."

  • Colossians 1:13-14:  "For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins."

  • Galatians 3:13:  "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: 'Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.'"

  • Titus 2:14: "who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good."

📜 Old Testament Promises of Redemption

  • Psalm 130:7:  "Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption."

  • Isaiah 44:22:  "I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist.  Return to me, for I have redeemed you."

  • Job 19:25:  "I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth."

  • Psalm 107:2:  "Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story— those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,"

⏳ The Future Hope of Redemption

  • Romans 8:23:  "Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies."

  • Ephesians 4:30:  "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."

  • Luke 21:28:  "When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

Bought at a Price

The concept of being "bought at a price" refers to the redemption purchased by Jesus Christ's sacrifice.  Here are three key Bible verses in the New International Version (NIV) about being bought:

📜 Verses on Being Bought (NIV)

1.  1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (The Ultimate Ownership)

This passage emphasizes that the body belongs entirely to God because of the purchase price.

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore honor God with your bodies."

2.  1 Corinthians 7:23 (The Resulting Obligation / Freedom from Human Control)

"You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings."

3.  1 Peter 1:18-19 (The Precious Price)

This verse explicitly names the price paid, contrasting it with worldly wealth.

"For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life inherited from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or spot."

4.  Titus 2:13-14 (The Purpose of the Purchase)

This passage focuses on why Christ paid the price—to redeem and purify a people for Himself.

"...while we await the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good."

These verses clearly establish the central concepts:

  • The Price:  The precious blood of Christ.

  • The Result:  Redemption (being bought back) and purification.

  • The Outcome:  We are no longer our own, but belong to God, dedicated to holiness.

These verses emphasize that believers no longer belong to themselves or the ways of the world, but to God, because of the high price He paid—the blood of Jesus.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness is the essential result of the redemption offered by God through Christ.  The two concepts are inseparable in the Bible.

Here are some key NIV Bible verses focusing on Forgiveness, starting with how it connects directly to redemption:

✨ Forgiveness and Redemption in the NIV

These verses directly link Christ's redemptive act (through His blood/sacrifice) to the forgiveness of sins.

  • Ephesians 1:7:

"In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace."

  • Colossians 1:13-14:34

"For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins."

  • Acts 10:43:

"All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

  • Matthew 26:28 (The Last Supper):

"This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."

💖 God's Promise of Complete Forgiveness

These verses highlight the total and complete nature of God's pardon when we confess and repent.

  • 1 John 1:9:

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

  • Psalm 103:12:8

"as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us."

  • Micah 7:18-19:

"Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance?  You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.  You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea."

  • Hebrews 8:12:

"For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."

🙏 The Command to Forgive Others

Because we have been forgiven so completely by God, the Bible instructs us to extend that same grace to others.

  • Ephesians 4:32:

"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."

  • Colossians 3:13:13

"Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone.  Forgive as the Lord forgave you."

  • Matthew 6:14-15:16

"For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins."

  • Luke 6:37:19

"Do not judge, and you will not be judged.  Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned.  Forgive, and you will be forgiven."
